I was lucky enough to see Northern Ballet’s Beauty and The Beast last night at Leeds Grand Theatre and WOW! What a treat! The production was absolutely stunning. The colours were rich and vibrant, the set design truly striking, the dancers mesmerising, and the score infectious. How lucky are we to have such a great little ballet theatre right here in Leeds?
Choreographed by David Nixon, with music from Saint-Säens, Bizet, Debussy and Glazunov, played by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia, this new ballet is an exciting addition to the Company’s repertoire of family ballets. It rediscovers the enchanting and magical aspects of this traditional fairytale.
The fabulous set, designed by Duncan Hayler, is a star in its own right with features like the beautiful white rose that cradles Beauty and the old jalopy that turns into a makeshift home for her family demanding appreciative attention. Not to mention the numerous clever props that regularly transformed the scene.
And the costumes! These were designed by David Nixon – is it right that any one individual be so talented? Choreographer and costume designer? These haute couture-style costumes were so original, so colourful, and added so much to the production. What’s more, the show was shot through with humour and had the audience regularly laughing out loud.
If you are looking for a show to take in over Christmas you couldn’t go wrong with Beauty and The Beast. It continues at The Grand Theatre until Saturday 31st December. Tickets available from 0844 848 2705 or www.leedsgrandtheatre.com
