Leeds residents are being asked to get creative and help name the new £27m wellbeing centre at Holt Park in a completion launched by Leeds City Council. The winner will not only have a hand in naming an important community landmark but will also win a six-month Bodyline fitness membership to be used immediately or when the new centre opens, as well as being a special guest at the ‘turning of the sod’ ceremony in February to celebrate work starting on site.
The centre will be one of the first of its kind in the UK, combining adult social care with youth and sports services and facilities for the local community all under one roof. It will replace the current Holt Park Leisure Centre and is scheduled to open in December 2013.
The centre will provide state-of-the-art new leisure facilities that include: a hydrotherapy pool, 25-metre swimming pool and teaching pool; multi-activity rooms, meeting areas and café; older people’s hub and learning disabilities hub; Studio and a Bodyline gym; Garden area, large activity hall and Changing Places facilities.
The new centre will enable people to access social care and community facilities within their local area. It will also help people with greater needs such as a physical or learning disability or a mental health problem access the personalised services they need confidently and easily.
Some of the potential names already suggested include Holt Park wellbeing centre, Holt Park active living centre, Holt Park active life centre and Holt Park active lifestyle centre but further suggestions are welcomed before a final choice is made.
Entries should reflect the range of activities to be carried out in the new centre as well as being short and easily pronounced and not named after an individual. Email your suggestion to wellbeing@leeds.gov.uk along with the name of the entrant, a contact telephone number and an email address. Entries can also be posted to or handed in at the current Holt Park Leisure Centre, Holt Road, Holt Park, Leeds, LS16 7QD.
Entries close on Friday 27 January and the winner will be selected by a panel made up of councillors, current leisure centre customers, council officers and a member of the working group who advised on the make-up of the new centre.
